TwinSpires companions with Mazatal Resort & On line casino in Arizona
The Arizona sports betting market is getting a new member.
Churchill-Downs’ TwinSpires AZ Sportsbook announced Friday that it is partnering with the Tonto Apache Tribe to secure market access to Arizona. Tonto Apache Tribe is the owner and operator of the Mazatal Hotel and Casino.
“Together with our world-class partner, we look forward to supporting the local community and bringing more visitors to the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino and our beautiful county,” said Calvin Johnson, Chairman of Tonto Apache, in a press release.
Through the deal, TwinSpires will be able to open a sports betting retail outlet at the Mazatal Hotel and Casino. TwinSpires will also launch its online sports betting offering in the state. Both retail and mobile sports betting businesses are subject to obtaining proper gaming licenses and obtaining government approvals.

TwinSpires is currently available in six states including Colorado, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Michigan. Churchill Downs’ sports betting and iGaming platform in New Jersey will switch to the TwinSpires brand in the third quarter of 2021.
Arizona is aiming for a start before the NFL season
TwinSpires and the other operators in the state might be ready to bet on NFL games. The state recently announced that it is still on schedule to meet its target “go-live” date of September 9, which will also mark the start of the 2021-22 NFL season that will see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers do the Dallas Cowboys house. The Arizona Cardinals debut their season on September 12 against the Tennessee Titans.
The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) started accepting applications Monday. It has also published the final proposals for regulations and the application on its website and has sent the proposed regulations to the Office of the Foreign Minister.
Arizona law allows a maximum of 20 betting licenses for events in the state, with 10 reserved for the tribes of Arizona. Another ten are an owner of a professional sports team in Arizona, an athletic facility that runs an annual PGA Tour tournament, a franchisee, a state NASCAR race organizer, and an agent or promoter responsible for running both retail events is mandated to reserve bets in a sports facility or complex and mobile event bets within the state.
There are also 10 limited event betting licenses available that are reserved for racetrack facilities or additional OTBs in Arizona.
