Toyota Says It Will Make investments $ 1 Million In Gibson County’s New YMCA – WISH-TV | Indianapolis Information | Indiana climate
PRINCETON, Ind. (Within the business of INdiana) – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana says it will invest $ 1 million to build a new YMCA in Princeton, a first for the community of 8,600 people. The announcement comes as the automaker unveiled its new hybrid minivan, the 2021 Sienna, which will be manufactured in Princeton.
The announcement was made at the former Lowell Elementary School, where the YMCA is being built.
“It just gives you goose bumps. I grew up in Gibson County and we really needed it, ”said Leah Curry, president of Toyota Indiana. “The new Toyota Indiana YMCA gives everyone access and helps Gibson County’s residents with the resources they need to lead better lives. And a resilient community benefits us all. “
The non-profit organization plans to create areas for a STEM lab, teaching kitchen, gym, childcare area, and more. They hope to open in January 2022.
The facility will be connected to the Southwestern Indiana YMCA, which operates out of Evansville. The organization says Phase 1 of the project is approximately $ 2.5 million, funded primarily by private and corporate donations to the capital campaign.
The organization says the Princeton Center will cater not only to health and wellness needs, but relationships with the community as well.
“It’s a meeting place. This is not a fitness center. It’s not a gym and swim. It’s a meeting place. And that’s exactly what YMCAs are, ”said YMCA of Jonathan Pope, president and chief executive officer of Southwestern Indiana. “By working with a community partner like Toyota, we can provide access to wellness programs and activities. Most importantly, we will provide a community resource for the whole family. “
According to Curry, North Gibson School Corp. agreed to donate the Lowell school grounds to the project. The YMCA says it is currently finalizing environmental testing before the property officially closes.
This year TMMI celebrates the 25th anniversary of the groundbreaking of the Princeton plant, which currently employs 7,000 people.
The Princeton plant is the top manufacturer of its midsize Highlander SUV, according to Toyota Indiana. However, the new Sienna hybrid minivan was unveiled on Wednesday. According to Curry, the new vehicle required special staff training and changes within the facility to accommodate new manufacturing equipment and technologies.
“It has 3,500 new parts,” said Curry. “This amount of changes affects everyone on the team from the stamp line process to the very last line.”
