IU to host St. John’s in Gavitt Tipoff | Sports activities
BLOOMINGTON – Indiana will receive an Early Test for the 2021-22 season and will face St. John’s in the sixth annual Gavitt Tipoff Games on November 17th at the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Tipoff times have yet to be set as the games will air on the Big Ten Network and FS1.
The games alternate against opponents from Big East and Big Ten. IU is 2-1 all-time in the event with wins against Creighton at home in 2015 and 2018 and a road loss in 2017 at Seton Hall.
St. John’s finished 16-11 last season under Big East Coach of the Year Mike Anderson. The Red Storm were led by junior Julian Champagnie, who led the Big East with 19.8 points per game. Champagnie put his name on the NBA draft and has until July 7th to decide whether to go back to school.
In addition to Champagnie, St. John’s added a pair of potential impact transfers from the Big Ten this off-season – Purdue striker Aaron Wheeler and Rutgers security guard Montez Mathis.
Indiana have an all-time 5-2 lead over St. John’s dating back to 1952. The last time the schools met, Indiana beat St. John’s 83-73 in the 2016 Maui Invitational. The last time the schools met in Bloomington, the IU beat St. John’s 105-80 on December 23, 1992 .
Together with St. John’s, Indiana has put Marshall, Louisiana-Lafayette and Merrimack as non-conference opponents on the 2021-22 schedule, according to various reports. The Hoosiers will face Notre Dame in December in the annual Crossroads Classic at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The pairings for the Big Ten-ACC Challenge are to be announced.
Purdue will not be participating in the Gavitt Games this year due to the rotation of the schedule. Butler will receive the state of Michigan on November 17th. Remaining Gavitt Games matches include:
