MYSTERY WIRE (Las Vegas, NV) – Last night people looked up from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and saw a strange string of lights moving quickly across the sky.
It turns out that it was caused by the same thing that led millions of people around the world to believe that they were seeing something from another world coming to earth.
The real answer to what it was is a lot less dramatic. The “lights” in the sky were SpaceX Starlink satellites that were launched and put into orbit to provide Internet access to underserved areas. The light is actually reflected from the small satellites shortly after sunset.
The satellites will be launched and deployed in batches of 60. It takes several weeks for them to spread. During this time, the reflection can look like a string of lights.
You can use this tracking site to find out if you can see the satellites.
In the past few months, the same sights have been reported in at least Oklahoma, Utah, and along the east coast.
Although people still report the bright lights crossing the night sky, the lights used to be much brighter.
Starlink satellites will fix light pollution
By the end of 2019, many sky watchers noticed a strange phenomenon in the night sky.
A year ago, Mystery Wire reported that an unforeseen effect of these many objects in low-earth orbit was the reflection of the sun during orbit elevation. Elon Musk said SpaceX is working on a way to address this light pollution problem.
One way is a sun protection on the solar reflectors, which will already be in place at future starts. Musk has said the parasols will be made from a dark foam that shouldn’t interfere with radio transmission. SpaceX decided to coat the satellites with a less reflective coating, but people can still see them in the night sky.

“I was with the family in the back yard and relaxed. Then we looked at the night sky and the lights appeared,” Rick Detisch III told the television station KLAS in Las Vegas. “It was a big straight line about an inch apart, maybe 20 or 30 lights… I don’t know what we know, but I know what I saw. I’ll call, tell you that. “
