Indiana Basketball: Information & Notes one week earlier than watching video games
It’s a huge recruiting weekend for the 5-star Big Dawson Garcia from Prior Lake. Minn. Is in town until Sunday during his official visit. He is the top target on Indiana’s list of potential recruits for the 2020 class. He is one of the five tallest men in the country.
From what we know so far, he spent Friday morning with IU trainer Archie Miller and his staff and was seen having lunch at Buffa Louie just off campus on Friday afternoon. He posed for a few pictures and seemed to be having fun.
Garcia, whose list of schools is in Indiana, Minnesota, Memphis, and Marquette, appears to be making a decision soon. According to a recent interview with Garcia, what’s next could be a decision as soon as next week.
“I’ll probably find out after my visit to Indiana,” Garcia said in a video on Peegs.com this week. “Sit down with my parents and discuss things.”
Garcia has spoken many times about how much he likes Indiana’s coaching staff and players, and he’s familiar with 2020. Hoosier hires Trey Galloway and Anthony Leal. They all played together all summer.
It’s no surprise that Indiana’s other 2020 class engagements are fully recruited as well. Bloomington South’s Anthony Leal, the state’s # 1 player who signed up for IU in August, took Dawson’s arrival to Twitter for a push.
Garcia would be a huge asset to the Hoosiers in dire need of tall men. A native of Minnesota, Prior Lake, was hard-recruited by Miller and IU assistant Tom Ostrom, who has close ties with Minnesota. He also recruited the current Hoosier Race Thompson from Minnesota.
It will be interesting to see if a commitment is made this weekend or soon after.
4 Big Ten teams in the AP pre-season poll
Indiana didn’t get any votes in the Associated Press preseason basketball poll, which wasn’t surprising. What will be surprising, however, is if this doesn’t change later.
The state of Michigan was the prohibitive # 1 team, getting 60 of the 65 first place votes. Maryland was No. 7, Ohio was No. 18, and Purdue was No. 23. Illinois and Michigan were the only other conference teams that got votes.
Indiana falls between seventh and eleventh place in various preseason Big Ten rankings. And your chances of winning the Big Ten? According to Bovada, the Hoosiers have odds of 22 to 1 to win the conference. You are 100 to 1 to win the NCAA title.
IU’s exhibition game for Tuesday against Gannon
Indiana Props will open the doors to Assembly Hall on Tuesday when its only exhibition game of the season against Gannon University. The game begins at 7 p.m. ET.
Gannon is a small Catholic college in Erie, Pennsylvania participating in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, a Division II league. You were selected to finish sixth in the PSAC West Division of nine teams.
The only connection to Indiana is with Gannon’s senior point guard Matt Johnson. He played high school basketball with Indiana’s Justin Smith in Stevenson, Illinois. Johnson was two years ahead of Smith.
Indiana adds Cincinnati newcomer Michael Shipp as a companion
Michael Shipp, who won consecutive state championships at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, has joined the Indiana basketball program as a walk-in player.
The 6-foot-3 freshman security guard joins junior security guard Cooper Bybee, freshman security guard / striker Nathan Childress, junior security guard Jacquez Henderson, and senior security guard Adrian Chapman this season.
Shipp averaged 6 points per game last year for Moeller, who ended the season unbeaten a year ago (29-0).
