DNR says black bear was noticed close to the Indiana border
CLARK COUNTY, Indiana – The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife says a Clark County, Indiana black bear was spotted across the Ohio River.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says since bears are strong swimmers, the bear will likely cross the river into Indiana.
“We’re fortunate to have a confirmed sighting just across our state line,” said Brad Westrich, mammal researcher at DNR. “This sighting gives Hoosiers in the region the opportunity to secure outdoor grills, rubbish bins or animal and bird feed.
Black bears prefer to avoid humans and removing potential food sources goes a long way towards preventing negative interactions, ”added Westrich.
Residents are asked to report sightings by calling DNR Law Enforcement at (812) 837-9536.
DNR says if you encounter a bear, do not feed it or approach it.
