2 kids killed in crash in Blackford County
BLACKFORD COUNTY, Ind. – Two children are dead after the pickup truck they were driving in collided with a tractor-trailer late Friday.
It happened just before 8:30 p.m. on State Road 18 west of State Road 3, not far from Montpelier in north Blackford County.
Blackford County’s medical examiner Zach Crouch told 13News that the victims, a boy and a girl, both under the age of 8, were pronounced dead at the scene. The man who drove the pickup was taken to IU Health Blackford Hospital before being flown to Ft. Wayne for further treatment.
Investigators said the pickup driver identified as Robert Cook, 37, from Montpelier had headed east and entered the west lane, being head-on with the semi driven by Jason Long, 43, from Cogan Station, PA westbound collided before it caught fire.
Long and a passenger in the semi were not injured.
Toxicological tests have been performed on both drivers as a standard procedure and the results are pending.
The Blackford County Sheriff’s Office and State Police are still investigating.
