2 juveniles for assaulting the imam close to the Dar Al-Farooq mosque – WCCO

, minn. (WCCO ​​/ AP) – A 16- and 13-year-old boy is charged with assaulting an imam who was attacked on his way to nightly prayers in Bloomington.

The attack on Sheikh Mohamed Mukhtar occurred on August 6 along the 8200 block of Park Avenue. The imam was attacked while going to prayers just one day after the three year anniversary of a mosque bombing.

According to investigators, the imam reported that both attackers kicked and hit him. He suffered two fractures in his left shoulder.

said there was no immediate evidence that the attack was a bias crime based on testimony from the victim as well as any of the suspects. Police said a person they spoke to claimed they spoke about robbing someone because they needed cash.

A 16-year-old boy was charged with third degree assault, and a 13-year-old boy was also charged. One of them told investigators that the entire incident was just “stupid joke”. Surveillance photos show the two boys approaching Mukhtar and running back to the park after the attack.

Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison plan to visit Bloomington Mosque on Friday to show solidarity with the Imam and demand religious acceptance and unity. The governor, attorney general and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan will be accompanied by Imam Mohamed Omar of the Dar al-Farooq Center and other religious leaders including Rev. Curtiss DeYoung of the Minnesota Council of Churches and Rabbi Jill Crimmings of the Minnesota Rabbinical Association.

An Illinois militia leader accused of being the leader in the 2017 mosque bombing is awaiting trial. Two co-defendants pleaded guilty. Prosecutors claim they hoped to get Muslims to leave the US. Nobody was injured in this attack.
